In short

  • We expect deciding on the company’s structure, not the idea itself, to be the slowest stage.
  • In our own projects so far, a pitch fixed early seemed to need fewer rewrites later.
  • We think a written plan shortens every conversation with a bank or an investor.

Where we think nine months goes.

This report is a tracking sheet, not a result. For each venture we record the steps from a first idea to a company that trades: the plan, the setup, the first site, the launch.

For every step we note when it started, when it ended, and who had to decide something before it could move. We expect the waiting, not the work, to take most of the time.

When enough ventures have gone through it, we will publish the stages and how long each took. Until then, this page explains what we record and why.

Figure

Time per stage, idea to company

The chart for this report will show the time spent at each stage, from first idea to a trading company. It comes once enough ventures are tracked.1

Limitations

What these notes cannot show yet
No venture has been counted yet. The stages come from the way we work, so a founder working alone, or with another team, may meet them in a different order.
